In 2006, the city completed a Sewer Rate and Urban Runoff Study, which incorporated a resolution to annually increase these charges based on August Consumer Price Index in order to keep pace with costs of maintaining the city’s sewer system and urban water runoff program.
Based on the August 2021 CPI, a 4.0% increase was applied to the current rates. For residential customers this resulted in a $0.10 increase in the monthly urban runoff rate and a $0.36 increase in the monthly sewer rate. The new residential monthly rates are $2.52 for urban runoff and $9.43 for sewer, effective January 1, 2022.
The urban runoff charges support our compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act, which mandates all cities to monitor and reduce the amount of pollutants in storm water and urban runoff that flow into creeks, rivers, lakes, and oceans.
The sewer charges support the operations of the sewer system and needed capital improvements identified in the sewer master plan. An upcoming project is the Briarwood Lift Station Replacement Project at an approximate cost of $1 million. The Sewer Master Plan (2021) identified approximately $19 million in citywide sewer improvements needed over the next 10 years.
